Former Superman actor Dean Cain offered his hot take on James Gunn's vision for the new Superman movie.
There has been an online discourse regarding Gunn's recent comments on framing the new DCU movie as an "immigrant story," similar to how the original creators of the characters envisioned them in the 1930s.
What Does Dean Cain Think of the New Superman Movie's Immigrant Focus?
Speaking with TMZ, Cain shared that he had reservations about Gunn's new take on the Man of Steel in Superman, especially its focus on being an immigrant story.
As some fans may know, Cain was one of the past actors who have donned the cape, having previously played Superman/Clark Kent in the 1990s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
"How woke is Hollywood going to make this character? How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters to exist for the times?" he said.
Cain also explained that "Superman's inherent weakness is his goodness" and is emblematic of his "great values." He also added, "We know Superman is an immigrant — he's a freaking alien."
He echoed the original motto of the character. "The 'American way' is immigrant-friendly, tremendously immigrant-friendly. But there are rules," he said.
Cain took issue with Gunn's creative decision and why there are limits on the way he is tackling the immigrant storyline.
"You can't come in saying, 'I want to get rid of all the rules in America, because I want it to be more like Somalia.' Well, that doesn't work, because you had to leave Somalia to come here," he continued.
"There have to be limits, because we can't have everybody in the United States. We can't have everybody, society will fail. So there have to be limits."
