A rare Boba Fett action figure that was recently sold at an auction is now the most valuable toy in the world.
Since the original film's release, Star Wars toys have become high-prized collectibles due to the massive number of people that are part of the fandom and, of course, the cool designs of the figures.
Today, the vintage toys from the original trilogy are now sought-after figures for many fans because of the nostalgic appeal and, in some cases, its rarity just like this Boba Fett toy that has set a massive record.
Rare Boba Fett Action Figure Sells for $525,000
Heritage Auctions announced that a rare Boba Fett action figure released in the late '70s was recently sold for $525,000, making it the most valuable toy in the world.
It beat the record of a rare Barbie toy with a one-carat pink diamond necklace. It was sold for $302,000 in 2010.
This also doubled the record of the previous most expensive Star Wars toy which was held by another Boba Fett toy in 2022 and sold for $236,000.
"The rocket-firing Boba Fett action figure long ago became such a mythic icon that people worldwide know about it even if they don’t collect anything at all," Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said.
"We knew this one had a chance to enter the record books, and it was thrilling to see it become the most valuable toy in the world."
The toy is a hand-painted and missile-firing figure of Boba Fett that was not released to the public after it was recalled for being a choking hazard.
It was created by Kenner in 1979 based on the character's appearance in Star Wars Holiday Special. Only two of the hand-painted figures are known to be in existence out of the 100 prototypes that were made.
The final version of the toy that was released to the public has no rocket missile with a note explaining, "The launcher has been removed from the product for safety reasons."
Star Wars expert and dealer Brian Rachfal revealed that the toy "was salvaged from a box of discarded toys deposited there for employees to take home."
This is awesome news for fans as it shows the long-lasting impact of the franchise, and it would be interesting whether we will see more vintage Star Wars toys top this record or at least become highly sought-after in an auction.
