The lightsaber is arguably the most iconic weapon in all of Star Wars and since the franchise's inception in the 1970s, most fans have only acknowledged the single-bladed saber which has been a fixture in every live-action project.
Over the years though, the lightsaber, much like Star Wars itself has evolved and we've been introduced to several variations of the weapon. However, The Acolyte's "new" version of the saber is causing a major divide among diehards.

Star Wars Fans Divided Over The Acolyte's Lightsaber Whip
The latest teaser for the highly anticipated series features our first look at the "lightwhip" aka a lightsaber whip, wielded by Vernestra Rwoh (played by Rebecca Henderson). In the new clip released on Sunday, the Jedi Master unleashes a purple-colored saber which later changes its shape to become a whip.
While some fans thought the weapon was cool, others weren't that thrilled by its existence. In fact, some fans believe the idea of a lightsaber whip is bad.
Thankfully, longtime followers of the franchise were quick to point out the rich history of the lightwhip which was first introduced in the '80s via Marvel Comics' Star Wars (1977) #95 in 1985. In fact, the weapon was regularly featured in various Star Wars media, just not in live-action.

The lightwhip was once relegated to the Star Wars Expanded Universe aka Star Wars Legends meaning it's not recognized as part of the franchise's canon.
Now, it appears that the franchise is ready to acknowledge it which is a good thing, especially considering we've already seen other lightsaber variants in live-action, from Darthmaul's dual-bladed lightsaber to Kylo Ren's crossguard saber.
Star Wars: The Acolyte is having a two-episode premiere on June 4 exclusively on Disney+.
