Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have been nothing but a commercial and critical success, however, the film also ended being an extremely divisive entry, irking traditional fans who were upset by the film's attempts at subverting expectation and for allegedly "misusing" legacy characters like Luke Skywalker.
While this vocal group of The Last Jedi dissenters is hoping that Star Wars eventually retcons the film's mistake's, Forbes writer Scott Mendelson says that it seems very unlikely that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is going to make any changes to the plot points set by Rian Johnson.
According to the writer, both Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Episode IX director J.J. Abrams know that there's no use in compromising artistic merit to fit with fan theories that "are hoised up as if they are valid artistic scholarship."
Taking a look at the story being set up by The Force Awakens, Mendelson reasons that grumpy, old, hermit Luke Skywalker was the only choice that Johnson could make for his film. Turning Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents into nobodies also made the most sense for her character arc because it forces the Star Wars hero to confront the idea that she isn't anyone special and that "she has to make her own path without any ancestral guidance."
It's a terrible revelation, one that's similar to Luke's parentage reveal in the original trilogy.
Retconning Rey's origin would ruin that, and Mendelsohn is sure that Disney wouldn't allow Abrams to make changes just to cater to a group of angry fans.
