The New Year brought on the start of a new decade, and everyone's been reflecting on the growth they've achieved over the last ten years. There have been a lot of decade lists making the rounds online last month, and now, it looks like Fandango's decided to join the game by sharing the site's top five selling movies of the past decade.
Taking to Twitter earlier this week, the America ticketing company decided to share its five best-selling movies of the decade, and as it turns out, all of the films either came from the Star Wars franchise or from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
First on the list was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the very first entry in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy. Then came Avengers: Endgame, the very first film to topple down Avatar as Hollywood's highest-grossing movie of all time. Third on the list was Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the divisive but critically-acclaimed and commercially successful follow-up to The Force Awakens. The fourth was Avengers: Infinity War, the predecessor of Endgame. And finally, fifth on the list was Black Panther, Marvel's very first mostly-black comic book movie.
"#StarWars and #Marvel alternated wins for the highest-selling films this decade via Fandango ticket sales," Fandango wrote on its post.
The list is only slightly different from the worldwide top-grossing films of the decade. Avengers: Endgame comes first with a total of $2.79 billion. Then comes Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a total gross of $2.068 billion. Avengers: Infinity War comes at a close third with a total of $2.048 billion, then Jurassic World with a haul of $1.67 billion, and Jon Favreau's remake of The Lion King with its $1.65 billion earnings.
At the end of the day, Disney's won big the past ten years, and we think the Mickey Mouse House is going to keep on raking in the money with even more Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney releases.
The latest Star Wars release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, is currently screening in cinemas.
