Spy x Family is arguably the most popular anime of the Spring 2022 season, and it was the most-streamed show in Japan for June 2022.
According to a tally of most-streamed content in Japan by GEM Partners (via Crunchyroll), Spy x Family is the top show on Japanese streaming platforms for June.
This tally is based on data from streaming services including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu Japan, and more.
Here is the top 10 list of shows and movies in the Japanese streaming charts:
10. Top Gun
9. Dragon Ball
8. The Boys
7. Kaguya-sama: Love is War
6. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
5. Kingdom
4. One Piece
3. Ya Boy Kongming!
2. Detective Conan
1. Spy x Family
Right behind Spy x Family in the tally is the ever-popular Detective Conan. Surprisingly, taking third place is Ya Boy Kongming. The anime got some buzz for its catchy opening when it premiered, and it seems that viewers continued to enjoy the series until the season’s end.
The rest of the top 10 include a mix of popular shonen anime such as One Piece and Demon Slayer, along with seasonal anime like Kaguya-sama: Love is War.
While most of the shows in the top 10 are anime, there are two exceptions. First is The Boys, Amazon Prime’s hit superhero series. What’s surprising is that Tom Cruise’s original Top Gun grabbed the 10th spot. This is likely thanks to the popularity of the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Aside from topping the streaming charts, Spy x Family also rated highly in Japan’s TV anime ranking for June 20-26 (via ANN). Specifically, the finale of the show's first half got a 3.1% rating. This means an estimated 3.1% of Japan’s population watched the episode on TV.
For comparison, the show has a similar rating to the likes of One Piece and Doraemon. The only anime shows that have a much higher rating are the likes of Detective Conan.
Given the popularity of Spy x Family, expect the show to once again top streaming charts when the second half premieres this October 2022.
