There's no doubt that there's a lot of anticipation for Spider-Man: No Way Home thanks to the appearances of the characters from the past Spider-Man films. You can compare the excitement for the film similar to the anticipation for Avengers: Endgame back in 2019. Now, with its first official day of release in North American theaters, it has already broken a very impressive box office record.
Deadline has reported that Spider-Man: No Way Home earned a massive $50 million for its Thursday preview making it the movie with the biggest Thursday preview gross this pandemic, the third-highest preview ever, and the most money that Sony has ever seen for a Thursday preview. It easily smashed the pandemic record previously held by Black Widow which earned $13.2 million on its Thursday preview during its release last July.
With its record as the third-highest preview ever, it is ranking behind Avengers: Endgame ($60 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($57 million). As a result, the film is now projected to earn $100 million on its opening day, which will easily beat the record of Venom: Let There Be Carnage as currently the film with the highest opening weekend this pandemic with $90 million. There are now box office analysts who are predicting that the film will get an opening weekend gross of almost $200 million.
It is very impressive that Spider-Man: No Way Home was able to get those records despite the current pandemic situation. It does show that the general audience was really looking forward to seeing the film and they want to see it as soon as they can be given how spoiler-heavy the film is. It also shows that the theatrical landscape is still alive and a film like this will make people go back to movie theaters as we are still going through the pandemic.
So far, the responses for the film have been positive and, as of the time of the writing of this article, it has a whopping 99% audience score at Rotten Tomatoes which shows that they really love the film. We will find out by the end of the weekend about how much it earned on its opening weekend.
