Spider-Man: Far From Home Writers Explain How Peter's Spider-Sense Got A New Name

There are a lot of things that people already know about Spider-Man. For instance, he has heightened senses that make him see better and have lightning-fast reflexes. In the comics, it is called the Spider-Sense. But in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it has a quirky new name that seems like a better fit for the current Peter Parker.

WARNING: Spider-Man: Far From Home spoilers ahead, proceed with caution.

In Far From Home, we learn early on that Aunt May has her own embarrassing nickname for Peter's gift. She tosses her nephew a banana assuming that he would sense it with his "Peter Tingle" and snatch the flying fruit out of the air. However, his, er, "gift" doesn't seem to be working but he makes it clear that he doesn't want his aunt to call it that ("Stop saying 'tingle', May."). So naturally, May shares the nickname with Happy Hogan who also starts referring to it as just that.

So why call it the Peter Tingle? Far From Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers told The Wrap that they tried to make sure the special gift was referred to without getting too technical.

"We were always struggling to be a little more nuanced about it or a little sideways about this special power of his without being on the nose and calling it ‘Spider-Sense,'" McKenna said. Sommers added that they decided on the nickname because it seemed like something an aunt would come up with.

"We definitely had some scenes where Happy was stumbling through different descriptions of trying to think of a thing to call it himself," he said. "We liked Peter Tingle because it's like your aunt calls it something, and that's the last thing you want it called, so then, of course, she doubled down and that's what she's calling it, and she tells someone else, and that's what they're calling it. It's very authentic teen life."

Luckily, it made perfect sense in Far From Home. Although the Peter Tingle seemed off at the start of the film, it became the one thing that Peter used to defeat his greatest enemy so far.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
