Is It Skip to Loafer or Skip and Loafer?
In Japanese, the manga is called Sukippu to Rofa. If that is translated into English, it should turn out to be Skip to Loafer.
This title has been used when the manga was serialized in Kodanshaās Monthly Afternoon manga in 2018.
The romantic comedy manga earned the attention of many readers to the point that Seven Seas Entertainment acquired the license to release it in North America in 2021.
It was then during this time that the title shifted from Skip to Loafer to Skip and Loafer.
Skip and Loafer Name Meaning
While there has been no official explanation about the meaning of the manga's title, Skip and Loafer, there are many fans who believe it is based on the series' two protagonists.
There are fans who believe that Skip refers to Mitsumiās personality as "skip" refers to a bouncing step.
As viewers might have noticed, Mitsumi is always skipping with joy.
She might be harsh on herself sometimes, but what makes her personality bright is her way of approaching life.
On the other hand, Loafer might refer to Shimaās personality as an idler.
In the first episodes of the school-themed anime, we saw Shima not minding if he was late or if he does well in school. He just goes through life without overthinking.
There are also some theories that the words "skip and loafer" refer to both of them.
For instance, "skip" also means to run away or pass over, which is somewhat related to Shima as well.
He has the tendency to run away from everything because of his idler personality.
He likes to think that most things are not important, so he keeps his distance from people. But that seems to change after he meets Mitsumi.
Meanwhile, "loafer" also means school shoes. In the first episode of Skip and Loafer, we saw how excited Mitsumi was about her new life as a high school student in Tokyo.
We can say that this is related to her shiny shoes which she carried as she ran to make it on time to the entrance ceremony.
Mitsumi values her school very much as she has planned her life ahead. She believes that she will only achieve her goals if she does well in school.
There are a lot of possible connections between the title and the charactersā personalities.
While these might not officially explain why the title is Skip and Loafer, it kind of makes sense now why out of all the words out there, these two have been chosen to represent the light-hearted, coming-of-age anime.
