Marvel Studios may have tried to poorly trudge along after Avengers: Endgame, but Star Wars went on a full stop when it came to box office releases and fans have been waiting for their comeback since 2019.
Rumors had been flying around the past week of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy looking to retire, and she took an interview to clarify things a bit—while also giving updates on some incoming projects, like the Star Wars movie from Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy
Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Film Set Post-Sequel Trilogy
Few details have been coming out about Shawn Levy’s Star Wars project ever since it was announced, and Kathleen Kennedy in an interview with Deadline confirms where it will be in the timeline—and as it turns out, it will be the first project in a while that will take place post-Sequel Trilogy.
Kennedy explains:
“It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out… And with this, it’s all pretty much new characters. We may bring some of the characters back from the sequel saga, but pretty much new characters.”
Other details that we know about the movie so far is that Ryan Gosling is going to be attached, and after The Mandalorian and Grogu, it’s going to be the next Star Wars project that goes into production—possibly even before the next Rey movie.
What Could the Story Be About?
Since this is a standalone movie set after the Sequel Trilogy, it’s possible that this film could just be reeling from the events of The Rise of Skywalker. By the end of that film, the Final Order is defeated and the Resistance succeeds, but there is still no established government after the First Order destroys the New Republic in The Force Awakens.
With Gosling’s age and the characters he usually plays, it’s possible that he could be playing a Han Solo-type who is seeing the aftermath of the defeat of Palpatine. There’s also the chance that he could be some kind of Jedi character, but it would feel like a shame to cast Gosling in something he can’t have fun with—especially in the world of Star Wars.
When will Lucasfilm Make the Reveal?
For now, it does seem like Lucasfilm has already taken a few years to develop and finally see where they’re headed going down the line. Though they have been releasing multiple series, they have been taking a break from the box office—unlike what Marvel has done, and now the MCU has painted itself into a corner.
Since the Mando movie has wrapped and production for Levy’s thing is expected to start soon, maybe Lucasfilm will have something to show near the end of the year. Fingers are crossed that the Rey movie gets an update as well, since Kennedy didn’t really update on that in the interview at all.
No release date has been set for Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie.
