Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Slams Racist Remarks Made By SNL Actor Shane Gillis

Marvel might be major strides for diversity and representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn't mean that everyone's become as open-minded.

Taking to Twitter, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has decided to call out Saturday Night Live member Shane Gillis for making racist comments towards people of Asian ancestry.

The SNL actor just recently used racial slurs in a podcast, mocking Asian-Americans living in Chinatown in New York. The actor even went as far making derogatory comments about women, individuals in the LGBTQ, as well as Muslims. In his podcast, Gillis defended his comments as edgy comedy, excusing himself from the criticism of the community.

Liu, however, hasn't been taking the comments that lightly. In his post on Twitter, the Marvel star says that the racial slur that Gillis used in his podcast is actually part of a long-standing history of Asian suppression in the West.

"It wasn't funny then, and it sure as hell isn't funny today," Liu wrote on the social media platform "This word has been used to dehumanize my people for over 150 years. You don't get to use it in the name of edgy comedy. Like the other members of my community, I am eagerly awaiting @nbcsnl's response."

Netizens on Twitter have come to agree with Liu, asking NBC's SNL to respond to Gillis' seemingly racist comments against the Asian American community. Followers are commenting on Liu's post, saying that SNL ought to remind their actors that they ought to abstain from promoting racism and narrow-mindedness.

What do you think of Gillis' comments? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premieres on February 12, 2021.
