Shang-Chi Actor Simu Liu Says He’s Proud To Be The MCU’s First Canadian Lead Star

Marvel brought in the big guns during the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con last week, revealing all of its plans for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio also announced its full cast for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the MCU's very first Asian-led comic book movie. Kims Convenience actor Kim Liu was revealed as the titular character, and ever since Marvel has revealed that he's set to play Shang-Chi, the actor has been having a pretty great time.

Speaking in an interview on The Beaverton, a Canadian news satire series, Liu couldn't help but joke about how proud he is to be representing Canada in the MCU.

"Ever since I was a small, jacked child, I knew I always wanted to be a superhero. But I never saw anybody like me on screen. It feels great to finally represent my people on the big stage," the actor explained on the show. Then he jumps in and says "Canadians" the very same time the host says "Asian people."

It's a funny little joke that shows what a great fit the actor would be for Shang-Chi (knowing Marvel's love for levity).

"That's right, I'm the very first Canadian lead of their very own Marvel Cinematic Universe film," he adds. "Maybe even any film, I haven't checked."

Liu really seems like a pretty fun actor, and we can't help but love seeing a new Marvel star with a great sense of humor. Hopefully, he doesn't spoil his own film the way Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland do when they go on press tours.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set for release on February 12, 2021.
