After Black Panther and Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios is looking to make their first film centered on an Asian superhero with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Destin Daniel Cretton is attached to direct, and he talks a bit about tackling the MCU's first Asian hero.
Talking to The Observer, Cretton explains, "It's really exciting to me to be able to fill a movie like that with a bunch of Asian faces and be able to see of sides of these character than what we have seen before… Growing up, I didn't have a super hero that looked like me and it's really exciting to give a new generation something I did not have. I couldn't be more excited."
Though Shang-Chi is a relatively obscure property, Marvel Studios is doing something clever in the sense that they're finding a way to connect his story to OG Avenger, Iron Man. Ever since the first Iron Man, the terrorist group of the Ten Rings has been an adversary of Tony Stark, and it seemed like they closed the chapter on the group in Iron Man 3.
Enter All Hail the King where it was revealed that there was a real Mandarin who has taken offense that his legend has been turned into a mockery. We didn't really get any significant update on the short since 2014, but now it looks like the Mandarin is now ready to reveal himself.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings comes out on Feb 12, 2021.
