Over two years have passed since The Flash's backlash and poor box office record, and yet any DCU fan can still recall the controversies the film and its lead star, Ezra Miller, faced.
Still, DCU director Andy Muschietti refused to believe that the DCU entry was one of the biggest failures in the franchise.
In Ezra Miller's Defense: Why The Flash Director Believes Negative Reception was Biased

In a new interview, Muschietti decided to address the public controversies and how the negative traction leading up to The Flash's release didn't stop them from executing their plan on the big screens.
"No, we just moved on and understood that sometimes there's a headwind and a project that you dedicated a lot of work to," Muschietti told The Playlist in a new interview, "And we're very proud of it. I think it's a good movie," while also commenting on "a lot of people did not see it."
Muschietti added how people tend to join the crowd, which somehow also affects the movie's performance in theaters, "But you know how things are these days — people don't see things, but they like to talk sh*t about it, and they like to jump on bandwagons. People are angry for reasons that are unrelated to these things."
However, the It director acknowledges that Miller's actions in real life did impact the project: "Of course, we had a publicity crisis with Ezra that is undeniable. And I'm not questioning that. And again, we love the movie. We, you know, we gave it our blood, sweat, and tears all the way to the end."
Muschietti even vouched having watched it just a week ago, "[And I] loved it again."
Could James Gunn's DCU Replace Ezra Miller's Barry Allen?

Muschietti does have a point in some parts. The Flash film led to the return of Michael Keaton's Batman, Sasha Calle joining as Supergirl, with Ben Affleck's post-credit appearance as his version of the Dark Knight in the DCEU movie timeline. Still, the worldwide box office spoke louder than the movie's promising premise.
The Flash grossed $271.4 million at the worldwide box office, based on a budget of over $200 million. While there's no certainty whether or not James Gunn plans on recasting or rebooting the Scarlet Speedster anytime soon, the 2023 flick won't be the last time Muschietti helms a DCU film.
After all, he is set to direct The Brave and the Bold movie in James Gunn's DC Universe. Though no official release date has been set for the project yet.
