Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson might have confirmed that his Star Wars trilogy is still in place, however, it seems like the filmmaker's new Star Wars films won't be using that December 2022 release date that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss left behind.

Earlier this month, word came out that Benioff and Weiss had decided to exit from their Star Wars trilogy, leaving behind a December 2022 release date that had been set aside for their project's first installment. Fans had been hoping that the release date would go to Johnson's first new Star Wars film, however, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the date is going to a different Star Wars movie.

While it might disappoint fans that they'll have to wait a bit longer for the first film in Johnson's new trilogy, the entertainment news outlet says that Lucasfilm is still preparing a new movie for 2022. Lucasfilm is most likely going to announce its slate of films as well as the director set for the 2022 Star Wars movie after it releases Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December.

An announcement after The Rise of Skywalker definitely makes sense. Lucasfilm probably doesn't want to steer attention away from the film. There's a lot of anticipation building up over the movie. Not only is Episode IX supposed to be the final movie in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, but it's also supposed to be the final chapter in the Skywalker saga.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
