It's no secret to a lot of fans that the DC Extended Universe has been struggling for years in terms of consistency and being a cohesive franchise overall. Sure, it may have produced films that actually managed to please even its biggest critics but for the most part, the franchise is still seen and treated by many as the inferior property compared to its "rival" the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As frustrating as that may seem, it looks like the DCEU is finally turning the tide thanks to Marvel director James Gunn and his latest project Peacemaker.
The John Cena-led HBO Max series has been generating positive reviews from fans and critics and with four episodes released, the show has managed to dethrone 2017's Wonder Woman to become the highest-rated DCEU project on Rotten Tomatoes. As of writing, the series holds an impressive 94% rating on the Tomatometer.
Taking o Twitter, the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker expressed his elation over the show's triumph. And while plans for a second season have not been announced, it would be safe to assume that Warner Bros. is also thrilled with Peacemaker's success and that alone is enough to warrant the series another season. It's a little too early to tell if the DCEU can keep the momentum going especially considering Warner Bros. has been notorious for making questionable decisions but there's definitely a renewed hope for the franchise with the success and surprising popularity of Peacemaker. I gotta say, keeping James Gunn on board may have been WB's best creative call in years and I truly hope he sticks around.
The first four episodes of Peacemaker are now streaming on HBO Max.
