- Quick Answer: Toy Story 5 follows Woody and friends as they battle technology, specifically a new gadget named Lily, while navigating the emotional reality of their aging.
Pixar has finally dropped the first official trailer for Toy Story 5, giving viewers a glimpse of returning fan-favorite characters and the latest antagonist – technology. But it seems tech gadgets aren’t the only problem here, as one small detail hits fans hard, showing the inescapable reality of life: aging.
Since the first movie in 1995, Toy Story has become Pixar’s longest-running and most expansive franchise, spanning over 30 years. With the toys visibly aging, it’s impossible not to feel emotional, and fans are already reacting to this bittersweet reminder of the passage of time with Woody’s bald spot.
What Did the Toy Story 5 Trailer Reveal About Woody?
The over two-minute Toy Story 5 trailer feels every inch nostalgic, with the return of all the beloved toys.
But just like in the real world, kids aren’t as interested in toys anymore, with the gadgets taking over. With that being said, the trailer introduces the toys’ new villain, Lilypad, aka Lily.
Lily has become Bonnie’s new favorite, and the toys are concerned. Rather than getting lost in the digital universe, they want to help their beloved human make friends in the real world.
So Jessie turns to Woody for help. Of course, Woody answers the call, but when he removes his trademark cowboy hat, his friends notice something unexpected: he already has an aging bald spot.
Sure, they’re toys, but the film cleverly shows that they age just like real people. In fact, the group is momentarily blinded by the light reflecting off his head, prompting Trixie to joke, “Someone needs a brown marker” to cover his hair loss.
“What are you? Some sort of old man toy?” Lily quips. Visibly confused, Forky explains, “She thinks you’re old because you’re bald, Woody!”
By the looks of it, Pixar has made Toy Story 5 and its characters extremely relatable to fans who grew up watching the franchise.
Many of these viewers, the millennials aged roughly 30 to 45, may feel reassured that they’re not alone in this existential crisis, as even the toys are middle-aging right alongside them.
How Did Fans React to Woody’s Bald Spot in Toy Story 5?
As expected, many fans took to Twitter to share their reactions to Woody’s bald spot. @werealwayson admitted they needed some time to process Woody’s aging.
@tanukimusic couldn’t help but feel nostalgic, remembering the first time they watched Toy Story as a child, and now, at 34, seeing a middle-aged Woody hits differently.
Meanwhile, @theFLICKpick called the move “genius” for this attention to detail, though it also made them feel “old.”
However, this wasn’t the first time that Woody had a bald-spot moment. In Toy Story 2, Woody already had a small bald spot, which was expertly repaired by Geri, the elderly, bespectacled toy cleaner and repairman.
Hired by Al, Geri meticulously restored Woody’s arm, repainted his face, and even touched up his tiny bald spot with just a stroke of his brush.
By the looks of it, Geri could have a brief cameo in Toy Story 5 after his hidden appearance in Toy Story 4, where a photo of him was displayed at Second Chance Antiques.
Toy Story 5 will be released on June 19, 2026.
