Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the gang are back in the forthcoming sequel Toy Story 5, which will continue their adventures seven years after the release of the fourth film. Fans have been eagerly anticipating what's in store for the next installment.
Let's explore everything we know so far about the fifth chapter in the Toy Story saga.
What is the Plot of Toy Story 5?
A teaser trailer was released, giving fans an early glimpse of what to expect from Toy Story 5.
The footage revealed the introduction of Lilypad, a high-tech frog-shaped smart tablet that makes Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs exponentially harder when they have to go head-to-head with the all-new threat to playtime.
During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark last September, Buzz Lightyear voice actor Tim Allen also teased that Jessie will be the main focus of the upcoming film, and there is a storyline that involves multiple versions of his character.
"It's a Jessie story, Tom [Hanks] and I have to reunite, and there's just the funniest thing, because there's a whole bunch of Buzzes involved. And there's a reason why there's a whole bunch of me, so there's 100 of me in a separate story, and I'm having so much fun," he said.
Fans can expect more details about the film's story in the coming months, leading up to its release.
Who is Returning in Toy Story 5? Who is Joining the Cast?
Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), Joan Cusack (Jessie), Blake Clark (Slinky), and Tony Hale (Forky) are all confirmed to reprise their roles from the previous films.
Ernie Hudson has been cast to take over the voice role of Combat Carl, following the passing of Carl Weathers in early 2024. It is currently unknown whether the roles of Mr. Potato Head and Mrs. Potato Head will be recast, as their respective voice performers passed away years ago.
Joining the cast are Past Lives star Greta Lee, who will voice Lilypad, and comedian Conan O'Brien, who will voice the toilet-training tech toy, Smarty Pants. Anna Faris has also reportedly been cast for an undisclosed role.
When is Toy Story 5 Coming Out?
Toy Story 5 is currently scheduled for release in theaters on June 19, 2026, as part of that year's summer movie season slate.
It is currently unknown whether the film will be available in premium formats, such as IMAX, so stay tuned for more details regarding the theatrical release plan. Nevertheless, fans are hoping that the upcoming sequel will match the same level of quality as the previous films in the franchise.
