Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan is the latest celebrity to venture into the alcoholic beverage industry joining the likes of other A-list stars such as Channing Tatum, George Clooney, and his fellow Marvel actor Ryan Reynolds. However, what looks to be a promising new move for the award-winning actor was met with negative reactions from fans over the weekend. Now, Jordan is on the receiving end of backlash from fans over accusations of cultural appropriation.
The Fantastic Four actor is drawing flak all over social media especially from fans with Caribbean roots for apparently getting the named J'ouvert trademarked for his upcoming rum brand. This move raised a lot of eyebrows online because the actor has no apparent connection to the cultural event itself. For the uninitiated, J'ouvert is an annual event held in Trinidad and Tobago and is famous for its colorful and extravagant celebrations aiming to honor ancestors.
After learning about Jordan's new rum venture, fans stormed Twitter to air their grievances about the actor "making a profit" out of a cultural event that doesn't even concern him. Safe to say the majority of people aren't so pleased. Check out the reactions below:
I totally get why a lot of people are pressed about the matter because obviously, cultural appropriation is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. I guess the Creed actor didn't think things through and it's now causing a lot of negative buzz all over social media. Hopefully, Jordan releases a statement one of these days to bring clarity to things because let's face it, he doesn't want to get on the wrong side of Trinbagonians.
Speaking of Michael B. Jordan, he is set to produce the DCEU's live-action adaptation of Static Shock.
