Marvel Star Natalie Portman Prepares For Her New Role By Reading Mighty Thor Comics

Marvel had a lot of pretty big news to share during the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con International last week. Not only did the studio reveal its entire Phase 4 slate, but it also made one of the most surprising announcements: Natalie Portman was returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jane Foster's version of Thor in Taika Waititi's upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

Fans weren't expecting to see Jane make quite the return – the last time everyone got to really see Jane in a Marvel movie was in Thor: The Dark World. Now, preparing for her new role as Asgard's God of Thunder, Portman is reading up on Jane Foster's Thor in the Mighty Thor comics.

Taking to Twitter, Jason Aaron, the writer behind the Mighty Thor comic series that ran from 2015 to 2018, decided to share a screenshot taken from Portman's Instagram story featuring the comics that she was reading as her Marvel homework.

"Looks like Natalie's already getting that thunder in her veins," the comic book writer wrote on his post.

Check it out down here:

For those who aren't familiar with the Mighty Thor comics, Jane Foster wields Mjolnir and becomes Thor after Odinson becomes unworthy. Surprisingly, Jane becomes worthy during the darkest time in her life – not only did her husband and son die from a car accident, but she had also been diagnosed with breast cancer. Becoming Thor only exacerbated her cancer because transforming into the God of Thunder would clear her body of all toxins including her chemotherapy. However, Jane would continue on becoming Thor to save others, eventually killing herself in the comics.

It's a pretty dark narrative, and so we can't help but wonder how Waititi might integrate that in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder premieres on November 5, 2021.
