It's been a long while since Disney decided to fire James Gunn after alt-right extremists' smear campaign brought to light offensive and inappropriate tweets that the filmmaker made fourteen years in the past. Though Gunn's been taken off of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney confirmed that it would continue working with the filmmaker's script, ensuring that the vision for the GOTG trilogy would remain the same.
Now, as the month's roll along and the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes to a close, fans wonder about the status of the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Unfortunately, it seems like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 just isn't Marvel's priority as of the moment.
Speaking in an interview with Collider, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige opens up about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, saying that the film has been delayed while the studio focuses on other projects.
"I mean, when it was pushed back, it was pushed back," Feige told the entertainment news outlet, "Meaning the release date because it's not coming out—although we've never announced a release date actually, it was gonna happen sooner rather than later, initially of course. Outside of knowing that we're gonna use [James Gunn's] draft, [we have] been focusing on other projects."
This will definitely come off as a huge disappointment to Marvel fans. Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge hit when it released, and so was the film's sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Now, it looks like the third film in the franchise is being put in the back burner while Marvel focuses on other projects - obviously, the studio is putting all its effort and concentration on this year's roster, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Hopefully, Marvel will have time to give GOTG 3 a look over once Phase 3 of the MCU finally comes to an end.
Captain Marvel premieres on March 8, 2019.
