Although Lin-Manuel Miranda’s character, Lee Scoresby, died after being fatally wounded fighting off Magisterium soldiers in the Season 2 finale, the actor announced his return in His Dark Materials Season 3 at the New York Comic Con.
His Dark Materials is a series adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novels bearing the same name. Fans who have read the books would have known that Lee did make a ghostly appearance after his death. But there’s a catch.
While Miranda is indeed returning to reprise his role via a surprise video appearance at NYCC, he made a comment of returning in “a corporeal or non-corporeal form”, indicating that other than his confirmation to come back as a ghost, there are other possibilities for the character’s development and role in the series, too.
His Dark Materials was released back in November 2019, followed by its immediate Season 2 renewal. It was also announced that the upcoming Season 3 is set to be the last of the show, anticipated to be released this year on December 5 with its final episode set to premiere on December 26.
Prior to Miranda’s announcement, he stated in an interview that in spite of his character’s on-screen death, he expressed his interest to come back to the series, referencing Pullman’s third book of the series, The Amber Spyglass, “If they see fit for Lee and Hester to return in corporeal or non-corporeal form, I’ll answer the call.”
His Dark Materials centers on protagonist Lyra, the girl prophesied by witches to change the world ‘to liberate her world from the grip of the Magisterium which represses people’s ties to magic and their animal spirits known as daemons.’ It would be interesting to see how Season 3 will unfold, especially because of Miranda’s intriguing tease of his character’s return and the fact that season 2 did not show Lyra learning about Lee’s death yet.
