The long-awaited sequel TV series to Crazy Rich Asians is officially moving forward at HBO after years of development.

Following the major success of the 2018 modern romantic-comedy classic, there have been attempts to make a sequel to cover the second book in the Kevin Kwan trilogy. However, the plans were eventually turned into a TV series instead, which is in development at HBO.

Now, the highly anticipated follow-up is finally happening.

What to Expect in Crazy Rich Asians Sequel Series

Variety confirmed that HBO has finally given the green light to the long-awaited TV series sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, which will begin production next year.

Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, and Ronny Chieng have all signed on to reprise their roles from the movie. No word yet on whether other cast members such as Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Harry Shum Jr. will also return.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, will serve as the series' showrunner. Jon M. Chu, who directed the film, is also returning as one of the executive producers, although it is unknown whether he will also helm episodes.

The plot details are still under wraps, but it will likely adapt the events of the second book, China Rich Girlfriend. The first season is expected to consist of eight episodes.

"Eight years ago, Crazy Rich Asians changed my life, and I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I’ve ever known. Since then, this cast has become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers, and even an Oscar winner, so bringing everyone back together feels like coming home," Chu said in the announcement.

"It’s been incredible watching audiences make this movie part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie, and I can’t wait to share what comes next. Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: ‘When are we getting the sequel?’ Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back."
