The new Netflix reality competition series Building the Band started its first episode with a tribute to the late singer Liam Payne.

Before his untimely death late last year, Payne served as a judge for Building the Band and filmed several episodes. It marked the last project he worked on, and Netflix has also confirmed that his family approved his footage in the series.

How Did the Building the Band Premiere Pay Tribute to Liam Payne?

The first episode of Building the Band opened with a message from host AJ McLean, in which he honored the memory of Payne and announced that he would make a posthumous appearance as a guest judge in later episodes.

"When we came together to film Building the Band, we never imagined we’d soon be saying goodbye to our friend Liam Payne," he said.

"Liam is a guest judge in later episodes, and through his presence, we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice. It’s through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family."

Payne's episodes in Building the Band will premiere next week, giving fans a glimpse of his final work and contributions to the series.

What is Netflix's Building the Band About?

As described by Netflix, Building the Band will "attempt to answer this question by forming the next great music group without any of the members ever seeing each other."

The talented singers who are competing will be matched with other contestants to form a band based on musical compatibility, connection, and, most importantly, merit.

With his experience as a member of one of the best-selling vocal groups worldwide, AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys serves as host of the series. He's also providing support and guidance to the participants throughout each phase of the competition, until only one band remains standing.

Nicole Scherzinger serves as a mentor and judge in Building the Band, bringing her unparalleled expertise and personal band experience to the competition. She is joined by guest judges Kelly Rowland and Liam Payne.

Viewers of the series are promised to expect "plenty of drama, next-level artistry, and unforgettable performances."
