In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Mundy offered an update on the development of the second season of Lanterns as the series is just premiering.
While he didn't share any details on the potential release window, he revealed that it is already in the writing stage and suggested it won't suffer from an extended delay.
"We’re just in the breaking-story stages. We’re about six weeks into laying out a season, and then we’ll talk to folks about it really soon," the showrunner said.
Not only that, Mundy expressed confidence that HBO and DC Studios will give an official green light to the second season, but he will still wait for the reception of the rest of the first season.
"You have to go forward with total confidence as if it’s going to happen. If it doesn’t happen, you also have to not be heartbroken. You have to just say, 'Okay, that’s the way it is,'" he said.
"It’s this bizarre trick or dance that you have to do for yourself. You’ve got to care so much, and then you’ve got to not be crushed if it doesn’t happen. It’s hard."
Mundy added, "We feel good that we told the story in season one well. The question is whether [season two] is a story people are interested in. We’ll see. I hope so. If that’s the case, then we’ll get to do another one. We’ll tell it in a slightly different way, so that it feels fresh, with characters you know and care about."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
The cast includes Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, Paul Ben-Victor, Laura Linney, and Paula Patton.
The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta V. Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct.
