- Quick Answer: Amazon canceled Melania screenings at Oregon's Lake Theater & Café after its marquee joked about the First Lady, sparking a viral standoff over corporate marketing control.
No documentary has ever been as controversial as Melania. Out of the 2000-screen theatrical run, the Lake Theater & Café in Lake Oswego, Oregon, will no longer screen Melania Trump's documentary. Here's what happened.
What is the Melania Documentary About? The Latest Buzz
Directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), Melania chronicles the 20 days leading up to her husband, President Donald Trump's second presidential win, as she balances her political duties and responsibilities at home. Amazon purchased the rights to produce and distribute the film for $40 million in 2025.

According to Fox News, Melania Trump "has made history again" for being the first lady of the United States to serve as executive producer of her own film, providing insight and context of her 20 days returning to the White House. Meanwhile, Melania claims that the film is "a very deliberate act of authorship" that invites viewers to "witness events and emotions through a window of rich imagery."
Now, Oregon, which is largely considered anti-Trump, revealed the truth as to why Amazon decided to pull the film out of its theaters.
Why Did Amazon Pull the Documentary Out of Theaters?
Amazon recently pulled the film from Oregon's screens, following the theater's marquee messages in promoting the film, which included statements like, "Does Melania wear Prada? Find out Friday!" and quoted Sun Tzu at one point, "To defeat your enemy. You must know them. Melania."
Manager Jordan Perry told The Oregonian that the theater received a call from Amazon asking them to pull the film (via Variety), "The studio was not happy and/or did not appreciate my take on marketing their film to our own public."
The marquee was subsequently changed and now reads: "Amazon called. Our marquee made them mad. All Melania showings canceled. Show your support at Whole Foods instead. Join Amazon Prime for Free Two-Day Shipping."
In the post, Perry detailed that the theater had also received emails and messages from local patrons questioning why the film was being shown at all. He explained that booking Melania was intended as a humorous choice during a slow movie week, rather than as a political statement.
"Wouldn't it be exponentially weirder, to the point of being funny, to show Melania here, at your obviously anti-establishment, occasionally troublemaking, neighborhood cinema?" Perry wrote in the same post.
