When it was announced that James Gunn would return to Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and continue directing The Suicide Squad for DC, fans were pretty satisfied. This not only killed the petty Marvel vs DC rivalry that dumb fans still have for stupid reasons, but it showed that the past does not define us, especially if we show change. Everyone is pretty happy about this, including MCU head Kevin Feige, who hadn't commented on it until now.
During an Avengers: Endgame press junket covered by io9, Feige was asked about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and James Gunn, where he revealed how happy he was with the move. While he didn't explicitly say he was happy with Gunn's return, the MCU head made it obvious that this was a decision that moved him in a positive direction.
"I won't say specifically [when Guardians 3was coming out] but I will say we're delaying when the film would have originally been. But thankfully [James Gunn] is back and he's doing it and all is right with the world."
Since this movie was originally meant to be a phase four installment for the MCU, it's safe to assume that we will wait years for this, especially since Gunn will work on The Suicide Squad first. When asked if the movie would go through any changes, Feige said that wouldn't be the case unless Gunn gets a unique idea to try.
"I don't think so.I mean we were prepping a movie and thenstopped prepping that movie when that happened. So that, obviously, naturally, delayed the film. In terms of storyline, the answer is ‘I don't think so.' Unless James comes back and says ‘Hey I learned this thing. I want to try this thing' or adapts his script that he's already written."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does not have a release date. Avengers: Endgame comes out in 16 days, on April 26.
