Kathleen Kennedy Credits James Bond as Inspiration for Future Star Wars Movie Plans

During the Star Wars Celebration event, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars movies that they are developing. However, the release windows for the projects still remain under wraps and they haven't officially committed a date for the first movie that they'll release from the batch.

Speaking recently with Empire, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy discussed her release plans for the three Star Wars movies where she cited the James Bond franchise as her inspiration on how she is going to make them an event release.

"I’ve often brought up Bond. That’s every three or four years and there wasn’t this pressure to feel like you had to have a movie every year," she said.

"I feel that was very important to Star Wars. We have to eventise this."

When asked whether she had an exact window planned for the movies, she noted that they will only get released when they are "ready" and it is likely that we won't see any of them until at least 2025.

"It’s much better to tell the truth that we’re going to make these movies when they’re ready to be made, and release them when they’re ready to be released," Kennedy added.

The three Star Wars movie projects that Lucasfilm announced are the post-Rise of Skywalker movie with Daisy Ridley's Rey returning, the Mando-verse movie that will be directed by Dave Filoni, and James Mangold's movie about the first Jedi set 25,000 before the Skywalker Saga.

Unlike the MCU which has an ongoing storyline in multiple projects, the new Star Wars movies are not part of a trilogy or have any story connections as far as we know so a James Bond approach to their releases is not a bad idea.

It is also a huge contrast to their previous strategy when they filled the gap of the Skywalker Saga movies by releasing spinoffs and standalone movies such as Rogue One and Solo, with the latter ultimately underperforming at the box office.

However, this time around, the Disney+ shows are filling the absence of Star Wars movies on the big screen so fans still have a lot of content to enjoy from the franchise.

For now, let's just wait and see whether this strategy that Kennedy is now doing for the new movies will end up happening or if they'll pivot to another strategy instead.
