There were lots of big announcements over the weekend at AnimeJapan 2023, though Jujutsu Kaisen takes the cake for being the most talked-about reveal. But aside from the new trailer and release date, it was announced that Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will replace its previous director, Sunghoo Park.
Specifically, Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season was directed by Park, though he won’t be coming back for Season 2 as he was instead replaced with another notable director who has worked on several MAPPA titles.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Trailer, Release Date
Ahead of AnimeJapan 2023, the second season’s release date was revealed accidentally.
Thankfully, the new trailer did not get leaked, meaning there was still a lot of hype for the stage event.
The new trailer exceeded the hype as it featured impressively animated sequences, including our first look at the much-anticipated fight between Satoru Gojo and Toji Fushiguro. It also previews the new characters.
Check it out here:
While Yuichi Nakamura and Takahiro Sakurai return as Gojo and Geto, respectively, the second season adds new cast members.
These include Anna Nagase (Ushio in Summer Time Rendering) as Riko Amanai and Takehito Koyasu (Dio in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) as Toji.
Aside from the new cast members, it was revealed that Sunghoo Park won’t be returning.
Many fans believed that this is the reason the new trailer features a slightly different art style and framing, at least based on the fight snippets.

Jujutsu Kaisen Director Sunghoo Park Won’t Return for Season 2
It wasn’t shared why Park won’t return for the second season, though a likely reason is that he is currently busy with his upcoming project, Ninja Kamui.
This marks a major turning point for the series given that Park was the director of both the first season and the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie.
While some fans will miss his work, many were happy to know that Park’s replacement is Shota Goshozono (aka Gosso), the renowned animator and director of Chainsaw Man Episode 8 and Ranking of Kings Episode 21.
For the most part, fans have reacted positively to Gosso being Season 2’s director, with many attributing the impressive sequences in the trailer to him.
Because of this, lots of fans are even more excited to see the next season’s big fights.
Fans won’t have to wait too long though as Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will begin on July 6, 2023.
