Fans have been calling Jujutsu Kaisen’s new season cinematic thanks to its impressive action setpieces. With the release of the latest episode, though, there is no doubt that Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is officially cinema.
That’s not just because of its explosive new fight featuring Sukuna. While the previous episodes have changed aspect ratios before, the latest episode sticks with a cinematic aspect ratio for most of its runtime.
Aside from being done for a cinematic effect, this aspect ratio change is also used to elevate the impact of the episode’s final scene.
Spoiler Warning: There are Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 spoilers in this article.
Jujutsu Kaisen Goes Full Cinema With Widescreen Aspect Ratio
Previous episodes feature shifting aspect ratios already, but the latest Jujutsu Kaisen episode truly went full cinema as it was made mostly in a widescreen aspect ratio.
It might not seem like a huge change, but it does add a lot to make the whole fight between Sukuna and Mahoraga more movie-like.
What’s great about this creative decision is that the two aspect ratios can also be interpreted as the perspectives of Sukuna and Yuji Itadori.
The episode started with a standard 16:9 aspect ratio when Yuji’s flashback was shown. After this, the aspect ratio switches to widescreen with black bars at the top and bottom.
This doesn’t change until the end when Yuji finally regains control of his body, adding even more impact to the pivotal Shibuya Incident scene.
Of course, while the aspect ratio change is memorable, that’s not the only impressive scene from the episode.
Fans Mostly Praised the Latest Jujutsu Kaisen Episode
Jujutsu Kaisen has already gotten much praise for its Yuji vs. Choso and Sukuna vs. Jogo fights. Despite reports about production issues, the show’s staff continues to pump out incredible episodes.
The staff went all out for the fight between Sukuna and Mahoraga as the entire fight scene was filled with crazy set pieces.
What’s more, Sukuna’s Domain Expansion was also animated uniquely and creatively, which got lots of fans excited.
Still, there are some complaints about the episode. Some fans didn’t like that the show’s opening played during Yuji’s breakdown. Meanwhile, others didn’t appreciate the parts that deviated heavily from the manga.
Overall, fans were delighted with the latest episode, and many are looking forward to seeing how the rest of the Shibuya Incident will play out in the anime.
