  • Quick Answer: Jon Favreau declared a quiet scene where Grogu plays with Rotta the Hutt as the most important moment in The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Director Jon Favreau reveals a surprisingly important moment in The Mandalorian and Grogu, and it is not centered on the lead characters, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and the Child.

Sure, the movie has several action-packed and emotional sequences, but one of the most significant scenes revealed by the Star Wars icon is something fans may not have noticed. So, what is it?

What Is the Most Important Scene in The Mandalorian and Grogu?

Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White) made his live-action debut in The Mandalorian and Grogu after first appearing as a baby in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Now that he has grown into an adult gladiator, he takes part in some of the movie’s biggest action scenes, including the gladiatorial arena battle and breakout on the planet Shikari.

However, according to Industrial Light & Magic animation supervisor Hal Hickel, who brought Jabba the Hutt’s son to life for the movie, Jon Favreau was far more invested in a much more subtle sequence involving Rotta and Grogu.

The scene in question features Rotta sharing a quiet moment with Grogu and playing with a ball after escaping death on Shikari with the titular characters’ help.

Hickel revealed that Favreau viewed the small scene as the most important moment in the movie and considered it central to the heart of the story.

The sequence shows a very different side of Rotta despite his intimidating appearance. While he is known as the son of crime lord Jabba, the scene reveals that Rotta still has an innocent side.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu may have underperformed at the box office, but it won’t be the end of Din Djarin and his adopted child’s journey.

In fact, Jon Favreau revealed that there’s more to come for the pair in the larger Star Wars universe, thanks to his wealth of ideas for the future of the fiery bounty hunter and his Force-wielding young apprentice.

“I think about it creatively, and so for me it's like a garden or a greenhouse with all the different storylines and characters,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I see opportunity in all of them, because these storylines have taken on a life of their own, and I love the progression of these characters, and I like to think forward as to what's the next step for both of them.”

For Favreau, the continuation of Mando and Grogu’s story is like a “wide open canvas.” However, he also knows that Lucasfilm president and chief creative officer Dave Filoni has been “thinking deeply” about the larger story, including how characters like Ahsoka and Thrawn fit together, while considering the timeline and how it leads into the next era of Star Wars.

“So I think that there's a lot of higher-order strategic decisions that Dave is making that this will fit into,” he continued. “But from my perspective, I have a lot of notes and ideas as to where I think things might go within this small microcosm within Star Wars.”
