As it arrives in theaters this week, the Rotten Tomatoes score for Joker: Folie à Deux has significantly plummeted in comparison to the first film.

The highly-anticipated sequel sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix in his Oscar-winning role of Arthur Fleck. This time around, he is joined by Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel as they embark on a musical mayhem all over Gotham City.

Considering the massive success of the first film and the accolades it received, fans have been hoping that the sequel will live up to expectations and become a satisfying next chapter of Arthur Fleck's journey.

As of the writing of this article, Joker: Folie à Deux has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 39% based on the 171 reviews they gathered so far. In comparison, the first film has a score of 68%.

The film has also suffered from a steep decline for the past fest weeks as it initially had a 60% rating when it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in early September.

However, as more critics have weighed in over the past few days, the score significantly declined as the majority of the responses have been negative, calling the film a disappointing sequel.

The audience score is not great either, as it currently has a rating of 37% indicating the general audience who have seen it so far is also not enthusiastic about the film.

While the cinematography and Phoenix and Gaga's performances were praised, Joker: Folie à Deux has been receiving criticism for its musical elements, divisive ending, thin plot and what fans saw as an underuse of Gaga's talent outside the musical performances.

Early box office forecasts have also suggested that the film will likely have a disappointing box office opening weekend as it is poised to gross $55-60 million which is lower than the first film's $96.2 million.

With many critics and audiences finally weighing on, it looks like the film is now destined to be a major disappointment, especially if the box office does end up getting underwhelming numbers.

Joker: Folie à Deux is showing in theaters everywhere.
