The critic reviews for the highly-anticipated sequel Joker: Folie à Deux have finally arrived, and it's already getting divisive responses.
Following the massive success of the first film (including an Oscar for Joaquin Phoenix), fans have been looking forward to the sequel and hoping that it will live up to the hype and quality.
The upcoming film will also take a different direction as it will have musical elements (although the people involved don't call it a "musical") and Phoenix's Arthur Fleck is going to be joined by Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn.
Joker: Folie à Deux is Getting Mixed Reviews
Following its world premiere recently at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, the reviews for Joker: Folie à Deux have arrived and critics who saw the film early were able to weigh in on whether it lived up to the hype.
So far, it is getting divisive responses across the broad as some critics called the sequel to be a worthy follow-up while some called it a disappointment and criticized its underdeveloped themes and musical numbers.
Despite the criticisms, Phoenix and Gaga still received praise for their performances. However, some also pointed out that Gaga didn't have enough material that is worthy of her talent.
As of the writing of this article, the film has a 60% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes based on the 43 reviews that they gathered so far.
Here are some of the reviews:
The first film also received similar responses when it was released in 2019, but it was still mostly praised because of its unique take on the iconic villain and mature themes that we don't usually see in a comic book movie.
It would be interesting to see what the general audience's response will be after seeing the reactions from critics and whether they would feel the same way regarding its musical elements and storyline as a sequel.
Joker: Folie à Deux will arrive in theaters on October 4.
