- Primary Subject: Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi status (James Mangold project)
- Key Update: Reports as of March 2026 indicate that James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi has been placed on the "back burner" or is "dead" following Kathleen Kennedy's departure from Lucasfilm.
- Status: Indefinitely Shelved / "Dead" (per insider reports)
- Last Verified: March 6, 2026
- Quick Answer: James Mangold's Star Wars film is reportedly scrapped or indefinitely delayed as Lucasfilm pivots toward a new trilogy and focuses on The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Before the Star Wars project hit its recent development snags, James Mangold (Logan, Ford v Ferrari) and co-writer Beau Willimon (Andor) envisioned a departure from the traditional Skywalker Saga.
But word has it that Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, which would have shown the beginning of the Jedi, might not come to fruition, after all.

In April 2023, then-Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced at Star Wars Celebration in London that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold would head into the Galaxy Far, Far Away to tell the story of the first Jedi.
During her exit interview from Lucasfilm, Kennedy said that while Mangold and Willimon wrote an "incredible script", she confirmed it to be "on hold." Kennedy clarified that it was not her decision, and still springs hope that "Anything's a possibility if somebody's willing to take a risk."
Recently, The Hot Mic podcast's Jeff Sneider shared word from a source that Dawn of the Jedi is "dead." Sneider added, "I can't say that conclusively, but it doesn't sound good. I think Mangold is focused on that Timothée Chalamet movie is what I think. I think Swamp Thing could be after that."
It would seem, similarly to how The Acolyte was treated, that the new Lucasfilm President, Dave Filoni, is pulling the plug on the potentially controversial prequel. Instead, Filoni has his eye on expanding the Galaxy beyond the divisive Skywalker Saga, specifically The Rise of Skywalker.
What Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi Would Have Been About

Dawn of the Jedi would have been set roughly 25,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, but few updates have been shared since.
Mangold told in a 2023 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he intended to take a much different approach to the Star Wars franchise, which may not have worked for Indiana Jones, but Kennedy found intriguing for Lucasfilm.
"The reality for me is that that feeling of space, no pun intended, was something that I felt was really important not to get away from fan service or the intricacies of what George had set up and dreamed of," Mangold said, "But to just have the space to tell a story and not be instantly encumbered with the bases you have to hit."
While Mangold remained enthusiastic about it, it eventually unraveled to be yet another Kennedy-announced film that would never materialize. Unfortunately. Would you have wanted a Dawn of the Jedi prequel in the roster? Let us know in the comments below!
