James Gunn continues to shake up the DCU. In a behind-the-scenes look, he reveals the creative philosophy behind the iconic Superman and Batman suits, from why the Man of Steel needs his red trunks to how the Dark Knight’s costume is another one of their tools for intimidation.

How Were Superman and Batman’s Superhero Suits Made, According to James Gunn’s Direction?

James Gunn promised DCU fans that the universe would have a different approach once he took over the mantle, and he did not disappoint! As it so happens, this promise included never-before-seen details of the Superman and Batman suits.

In an upcoming behind-the-scenes fitting for Adventures in Making Superman, Gunn explained his decision to keep the iconic red trunks even if they looked silly to transform from DC Comics to live-action because of one thing: “The thought that I always had was what you said: Superman needs to be huggable.”

Gunn emphasized that even as David Corenswet sported the lighter blue costume, “There is [still] something about this [suit] that’s disarming.”

Corenswet added that somehow, Superman’s signature trunks on the outside help with becoming a signal, “Everybody knows that I’m here, I’m public safety. I’m making myself the target.”

Meanwhile, Gunn also reflected on a similar aspect the Batsuit had: “Even with Batman, if I was doing Batman, I’d get into it,” the Guardians of the Galaxy director said, “Like, Batman is a f***ing manic. He puts on a scary bat costume and goes out and tries to scare people.”

Essentially, Batman is the antithesis of Superman. The Dark Knight prefers to lurk in the shadows like an undercover secret agent who prefers doing his missions alone and fighting crime on the side of justice, which aims to intimidate his enemies.

James Gunn may have shut down rumors of Robin the Boy Wonder making his live-action debut in The Batman Part II, but the sequel director Matt Reeves wasn’t about to brush that off.

Reeves’ interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast recently resurfaced to point out the fact that he seemed open to the idea of introducing the Boy Wonder in Part II.

Keep in mind that while no scripts or pre-production notes had been created at the time for the sequel yet, Reeves believed that adding the Caped Crusader’s sidekick could potentially make for an interesting story.

DC Studios’ Superman is available digitally at home on digital retailers starting August 15, which comes in 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 23.
