With the show’s release just days away, many are wondering if Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is canon. Along with its place in the canon, some are also asking where it fits in the franchise’s timeline.

This new show was announced back in Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, and it’s the second season of the Tales series.

All You Need to Know About Tales of the Empire, the New Star Wars Animated Series

The Star Wars Tales series began with the Tales of the Jedi, a six-part anthology series that told new stories about Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano.

For the follow-up, the new season will follow two characters whose lives intertwine with the Galactic Empire – Barriss Offee and Morgan Elsbeth.

These two characters played minor roles in the Prequel Trilogy, though they are major characters in other series. To be exact, Bariss Offee is a key character in The Clone Wars while Morgan Elsbeth is the antagonist of the Ahsoka series.

While this series will explore Morgan Elsbeth’s past, fans are seemingly more excited for Bariss Offee’s episodes, at least based on a Reddit discussion thread.

This makes sense considering that Bariss Offee’s fate continues to be unexplored in the various projects of the franchise.

Much like the previous season, Tales of the Empire will only have six short episodes. It’s likely that each half will focus on one of the two characters.

Is Tales of the Empire Canon in Star Wars?

As the previous season is considered canon, Tales of the Empire is also canon in the Star Wars universe, at least in the new Disney timeline.

This makes sense considering how pretty much all major Star Wars projects in the Disney era are canon, with everything else pre-acquisition being relegated to Legends status.

There’s also the fact that this series is created by Dave Filoni who is currently a key figure in the franchise.

Where Does Tales of the Empire Fit in the Star Wars Canon?

Tales of the Empire is believed to start in the year 20 BBY, meaning parts of the series take place before Revenge of the Sith. This is proven by the fact that General Grievous will make an appearance.

Given that the previous season featured some time jumps, it’s likely that parts of the series will also take place in the Galactic Empire era.

All six episodes of Tales of the Empire will be released on Disney+ on May 4, 2024.
