As the Marvel Cinematic Universe is ushered into a new era of film and storytelling, newly introduced characters are slowly going to take center stage. For the longest time, it was believed that Captain Marvel is picking up the mantle, but the new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer suggested otherwise.
As popular geek culture expert Charlie Schneider aka Emergency Awesome pointed out, there were implications in the new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer about Peter being Iron Man's replacement. One such moment is his conversation with cops although it was more of a comment to the fact that he is wearing the Iron Spider suit as opposed to his previous costume. Another particular moment is Nick Fury asking Spider-Man to step up.
While a lot of fans don't expect to see a new successor to Iron Man anytime soon following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker is essentially left to pick up the slack in light of his father or uncle figure's death.
Does this mean that Spider-Man is being built up as the new face of the MCU? It is to be pointed out that even though he is being set out as the replacement for Iron Man, doesn't mean he is the new lead too. Additionally, the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer also spends a lot of time showing Peter trying to be a normal high school kid with normal problems. So following Tony Stark's legacy may be too much for him at the moment.
Tom Holland has been in three films so far since his debut in Captain America: Civil War, with Spider-Man: Far From Home as his fifth. The character he plays is basically a comic book icon and his portrayal has so far been received positively, so he is in prime position to take the helm from Robert Downey Jr.
How about Captain Marvel? In the book Captain Marvel: The Official Movie Special, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has declared her the new MCU lead, recalling the time Brie Larson was officially introduced as Carol Danvers at Comic-Con.
"Having her come out on stage and stand there with literally almost everybody else from our movies. There she was at the forefront. And it was a great foreshadowing – not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe."
With Captain America apparently done with heroics as well, plus the similarity with the name and their leadership skills, perhaps Captain Marvel will be the replacement for Steve Rogers.
