A revival of the iconic medical comedy series Scrubs is currently in the works, and there have been debates on whether it was unnecessary to bring it back today.
While the idea of reviving the series seems exciting, fans are also wondering if it is the right move, as it raises the issue of Hollywood's current lack of originality.
The Latest Update on the Scrubs Revival
It was recently reported that the revival of Scrubs is officially in development at ABC and 20th Television.
The project recently overcame a major hurdle as series creator Bill Lawrence officially signed on to work on the revival.
While Lawrence won't serve as the showrunner of the revival, he will be heavily involved in the development while still working on the other TV shows he produces, such as Apple TV+'s Shrinking and Ted Lasso.
Now, 20th Television is working on securing the main cast of the original series such as Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, and John C. McGinley. Judy Reyes' status is unknown as she currently stars in another ABC series High Potential but she could potentially do both.
Bill Lawrence Reacts to the Criticisms Against Scrubs Revival
In his recent post on X, Lawrence responded to the criticisms against the revival of Scrubs and defended their decision to bring back the series.
"Guess the easy reboot sum up: I get some folks reservations the same way I get others’ excitement. Both just feel like pressure to do something cool/new/good. We’re gonna try. I imagine the world will let us know if it works," he wrote in his post.
In an interview last October, Lawrence was already teasing his plans for the revival of Scrubs and how he plans to blend the original and the new elements.
"We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot," he said.
"But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it’s a calling.
Lawrence continued, "There’s no cliché ‘rich doctors playing golf’ — that’s not what it is anymore. So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things."
