Anime and manga in the comedy genre are known for including popular references to add to their humor, and the supernatural shounen anime Dandadan takes this even further by filling its opening theme with nods to pop culture and the paranormal.
In Episode 10, a reference to Hiroshi Abe, a highly regarded Japanese actor, causes a hilarious reaction among fans. Let’s uncover what happens in this episode and the context behind this amusing reference!
Is Hiroshi Abe in Dandadan Episode 10?
When it comes to adapting Yukinobu Tatsu’s hit series Dandadan, Science SARU knows how to take fans on an emotional rollercoaster.
Whether it is tugging at heartstrings with emotional backstories or creating laugh-out-loud moments, they never miss a beat. This is especially true in Episode 10, where Momo Ayase’s impression of Hiroshi Abe left fans in stitches.
After the intense battle against the Serpoians, Momo Ayase, Okarun, and Aira Shiratori are left dealing with the aftermath. One of the Serpoians’ minions, the alien Mantis Shrimp, picks another fight with them but faints from blood loss.
As it turns out, the “blood” the aliens need is actually cow’s milk. In a surprising act of generosity, Seiko gives the alien a cow, which gets hilariously beamed up into the spaceship’s tractor beam before they leave.
Then comes the infamous Hiroshi Abe moment. Since Momo is asking for money to buy a new uniform and Seiko becomes frustrated with the financial trouble they’ve caused recently, Seiko decides to get back at her and makes her impersonate her admired Japanese actor.
Desperate to get the uniform, Momo gives it her all. She strikes a stoic pose, stands taller to look more imposing, and delivers the line “Rocket Engine Valve” in her best attempt to imitate his demeanor.
Her over-the-top performance leaves Aira in hysterics, and likely had viewers
laughing just as hard.
For fans unfamiliar with Hiroshi Abe, the joke may have flown under the radar. But thanks to Momo’s ridiculous impersonation, even those unaware of the actor still found the scene hilariously entertaining.
Who is Hiroshi Abe?
If you haven’t heard of Hiroshi Abe, he’s a well-known Japanese actor recognized for his tall stature, unique acting style, and starring roles in hit films like Godzilla 2000: Millennium, Still Walking (2008), and Thermæ Romæ (2012).
His lead role in Downtown Rocket earned him the Best Actor award at the 9th Tokyo Drama Awards. This is also the drama where Momo’s line, “Rocket Engine Valve,” comes from.
The scene is especially amusing for Japanese audiences, as the media has often described Hiroshi Abe as an “anime character brought to life” because of his height and distinctive features.
Interestingly, in the Brazilian dub, the reference shifts to Toguro from YuYu Hakusho. In the French dub, Momo’s impersonation is replaced with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator instead of Hiroshi Abe. These changes were likely made to better connect with audiences from different regions.
