Avengers: Endgame had a lot of iconic moments that fans will be talking about for the years to come.
One such thing includes Tony Stark's final stand against Thanos. The Mad Titan got a hold of the gauntlet once again and was ready to snap away all of Earth. Just as he attempted to, he says "I am inevitable" and snapped.
Nothing happened because it turns out Iron Man managed to snatch the stones without his knowledge. The hero uses a gauntlet of his own making and snaps the villain's army away. But before that, he utters his most iconic line, "I am Iron Man."
It turns out that this scene was not originally included in the Avengers: Endgame script. Robert Downey Jr. already filmed his death scene by the time the Russo brothers decided to add the line, the directors recently revealed in a new episode of the ReelBlend podcast.
Originally, after Thanos says his line, Tony would just snap his fingers without saying a word. However, it just didn't feel right for the directors especially since the character likes his quips even in the face of such devastating situations. The idea was hatched during post-production with editor Jeff Ford suggesting to include that specific line.
However, Downey Jr. wasn't too thrilled about reshooting the Avengers: Endgame scene, especially since he had to tap into such an emotional place to film the original. It took quite the convincing and fans have producer Joel Silver to thank.
"I had dinner with [Robert Downey Jr.] like two weeks before we were supposed to shoot it. And he was like, ‘I don't know. I don't really want to go back and get into that emotional state. It'll take… it's hard.' And crazily enough, Joel Silver, the producer, was at the dinner. He's an old buddy of Robert's. And Joel jumps in and he's like, ‘Robert, what are you talking about? That's the greatest line I've ever heard! You gotta say this line! You have to do this!' So thank God that Joel Silver was at dinner, because he helped us talk Robert into doing that line."
Avengers: Endgame marks the end of Iron Man's journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's amazing to think that when he met his end, it was by such a callback to a defining moment in his superhero career.
