The Lord of the Rings icon Ian McKellen knows something fans don't yet! Here's what the Gandalf actor spilled about director Andy Serkis' plans for The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming LOTR prequel.
Lord of the Rings Star Unveils How Long The Hunt For Gollum Will Be
Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav revealed in May this year that they plan on extending The Lord of the Rings franchise with a 2026-slated movie titled The Hunt for Gollum.
Set close to the events of the original trilogy, Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis plans on helming the upcoming addition to the franchise, with filmmaker Peter Jackson joining as a producer.
Well, apart from Orlando Bloom recently mentioning his interest in returning, Sir Ian McKellen himself confirmed that he, too, was approached for a reprisal.
"Well, all I know is that they called me up and said these films were going to happen, that [they're] mainly going to be about Gollum," McKellen also shared that the script will be arriving 'sometime in the new year', "...And then I'll judge whether I want to go back. [Laughs]"
While not too many details have been disclosed on what to expect for The Hunt For Gollum, McKellen does know this: "I'm told it's two films. I probably shouldn't be saying this [Laughs]. But I haven't read the script, and I don't know when it is, and I don't even know where it will be filmed."
Former Legolas star Orlando Bloom previously mentioned that Serkis may be planning on using AI to de-age their actors so they could reprise their roles. It remains to be seen if they intend to push through with that, though.
That said, a two-parter film for The Hunt for Gollum doesn't sound bad at all. If anything, it could convince fans that Middle-Earth is indeed bringing fans back to the nostalgia of seeing it on the big screens sometime in 2026.
