Starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Lanterns is making its way to HBO sometime next year. Considering that this new Green Lantern lore expansion and the actor depict a much older Hal, how would the DCU hero pass on the torch? Director Chris Mundy hints at how it all adds up.

In a recent interview on Men's Health, Lanterns creator and showrunner Chris Mundy (Ozark, Criminal Minds) seemingly hints at how fans might just have hit the nail on the head when it comes to predicting how John and Hal's dynamics would work in the end.
"Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement — when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?" Mundy told the outlet, "That push and pull between those two characters is really important."
Mundy went on to add how the Lanterns series intends to highlight John, especially given the character arcs he's about to embark on in the upcoming DCU series:
"So much of the power that John has is by not taking the bait, understanding that you lose your power if you're yelling and screaming. That's what we're trying to convey: that he knows he belongs, so he doesn't have to overcompensate," Mundy added.
"There's a real balance there that's just innately inside of Aaron," the showrunner went on to admire how much Pierre fit into the role, "He's big. He's an intimidating presence just physically. But there's a softness to him, too. There's a thoughtfulness. You can't teach that."
How Would the DCU Replace the Original Green Lantern Hero?

It is worth noting that while it's mere speculation that Lanterns might have intentionally depicted an older version of the hero to let Aaron's John Stewart take the wheel, nothing has been confirmed yet. Based on Mundy's comments, though, it's possible that Hal won't be the Green Lantern past the Lanterns' timeline.
In the original comic books, Hal Jordan did not directly pass his lantern ring to John Stewart. The Guardians of the Universe initially chose the latter as a replacement or backup to Hal Jordan's absence. This was after Hal decided to retire and prioritize his private life rather than commit to his duty in saving the world.
There's a chance that the DCU series might follow the same path, but for now, we'll have to wait until at least the first trailer arrives to confirm.
In the meantime, DCU fans can wait until HBO premieres Lanterns sometime in 2026.
