- Quick Answer: Scary Movie 6 reunites the original cast and creators to parody modern horror movies using the bold, "equal opportunity" comedy that made the series famous.
Marlon Wayans has promised that the highly anticipated Scary Movie 6 will "cancel the cancel culture" as the franchise returns later this year.
After more than a decade, Scary Movie is back on the big screen this summer with a sixth installment that will bring back the original stars, led by Anna Faris and Regina Hall, and parody the popular horror movies of the last several years. With the changing landscape in comedy, fans are also wondering how the upcoming film will retain the charm of the original.
How Scary Movie 6 Will "Cancel the Cancel Culture"
While the original Scary Movie movie, released in 2000, has been beloved to this day, fans have also acknowledged that several jokes and gags have become outdated and do not align with current values or the "PC culture" standard.
With that, some have been questioning whether the film will be able to reflect modern times while retaining the charm and tone of the original installments.
In an interview with EW, star, co-writer, and co-producer Marlon Wayans noted that the upcoming installment is intended to bring back old-school comedy and "cancel the cancel culture."
"What we're trying to do is bring back laughter. This is about bringing back comedy the way it used to be. And I think the only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture," he said.
Wayans also pointed out that the film will also reflect multiple generations by bringing back the old characters and introducing new characters.
"This movie is multi-generational. It's a conversation comedically that is needed, that needs to be had from our generation down to Gen, what is it? Gen Alpha. And it's all inclusive," he said.
Nevertheless, the sixth movie will stick to the original fundamentals of the franchise and what made it successful among audiences during its earlier years.
"We're gonna do what we always do. We're gonna make fun of everybody because we're equal opportunity offenders. We have a recipe, we have a formula that you can't mimic or copy. You could try, but it's very specific," Wayans explained.
"It's how we grew up, and it's how we see the world. It's the household we were raised in with the sense of humor that we all were governed with, that we inherited from our mother."
What is Scary Movie 6 About?
In Scary Movie 6 (which is simply titled Scary Movie), twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer, the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs, and no horror movie IP is safe.
Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall reunite in the upcoming installment alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every "final chapter" that absolutely isn’t final.
The cast also includes Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Heidi Gardner, Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, and Sydney Park.
The film is set to arrive in theaters this June 5, as part of the summer season slate.
