One of the most devastating parts in Avengers: Infinity War was when Zoe Saldana's Gamora made the leap on the cursed planet of Vormir in exchange for Thanos to retrieve the soul stone. Fortunately, to the fans' surprise, Gamora was brought back through time travel in Avengers: Endgame, and here's the reason why.
Even though Gamora's character is back, she isn't the one we adored from the past movies because it's another version of her from an alternate reality. Endgame writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus recently spoke with Comic Book regarding Saldana's character.
McFeely revealed that they had to find a way to bring Gamora back because she still had to be featured in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. McFeely says there were certain parts done so that "Gunn could do whatever he needs to do."
"That was just basically, you saw the behind-the-scenes stuff where they all kneel and she sort of boogies off-set," he adds. He thinks if that scene made the final cut, fans would've just thought that she's alive and "she's over there." He claims that it's "very vague now" and he doesn't know Gunn is planning to do with it yet.
Markus also shared his thoughts regarding the matter. He went on about how he liked that there's a "little dangling piece of time travel." He claims that "the bow wasn't completely wrapped up" which resulted in a "little bit of an after-effect." However, he admits that it didn't affect the movie but he doesn't know if it'll affect the upcoming GOTG film. He then shares how it's still "satisfying" because there's still a few strings "dangling."
At least, for now, we know that Gamora will be appearing in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. There would likely be a scene where we get to see a glimpse of how she would be adjusting again with Quill and the others. With that said, there's no telling on what Gunn plans to do with Saldana's character yet, so we'll have to wait for further announcements.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to release sometime around 2022.
