As DC fans approach 41 years since Supergirl last headlined her own film, DCU's Supergirl movie writer Ana Nogueira details how much different and unexpected Milly Alcock's version is from the previous portrayals of the heroine.

How Comicbook-Accurate Will DCU's Supergirl Be?

The DCU's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate happened to re-introduce the Supergirl from the actual comic books. Milly Alcock's cameo in the end shocked fans, especially when she turned out to be the actual owner of Krypto. Nogueira insists that this Girl of Steel's entry is just the beginning.

In a new interview with Variety, Nogueira, who penned the script for Supergirl, explained that while she had initial doubts on the character, the iteration that hooked her in comes from the fact that she is Krypton's last daughter.

"She watched Krypton completely destroyed. I was always like, 'I can't get my head around the version of the character that is so sunny," Nogueira added that she found what she was looking for when she had [Tom King]'s "rougher and grittier and edgier and funnier" take with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Its eight issues ran between August 2021 and April 2022, "When I read it, I was like, 'There she is.'"

How the DCU Debut in Superman Already Compares to the Classic Supergirl Shows

Supergirl was always portrayed to be the genderbent version of Clark Kent. The typical girl-next-door with the exact same personality. In reality, their iteration of Kara Zor-El was waaay underrepresented.

Alcock made her debut in the Superman movie, where she not only came over for a cameo to pick up her dog, but also her brief scene with David Corenswet's Man of Steel pretty much explains what we can expect from his cousin.

As Clark Kent told his robots, Kara is the type of 'alien' who'd prefer to get 'drunk where the red suns are' than stay sober and safe under the yellow sun. She is more reckless and seemingly self-serving, the polar opposite of what Superman came to be.

The Woman of Tomorrow graphic novel essentially portrays Kara celebrating her 21st birthday on a space journey with Krypto, only to be drawn on a revenge quest to save Ruthye, whose father was murdered by a cruel space pirate.

Supergirl wrapped up the installment on May 10 this year and is currently slated to premiere on the big screens on June 26, 2026. Stay tuned!
