The Iron Throne in Game of Thrones is meant to portray the power and status of the King of the Seven Kingdoms, so it is natural that it became the very symbol of the show. In fact, the seat being surrounded by hundreds of swords represent the very journey the leaders of Westeros had witnessed and experienced just to reach its seat. However, the seat isn’t similar to how the author had described it in the books. George R.R. Martin explains why Game of Thrones didn’t recreate the books’ Iron throne.

George R.R. Martin recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where the author discusses a few key differences between the novel’s description of the Iron Throne versus the Iron Throne we have come to know today. He even continues to say that House of the Dragon’s version of the Iron Throne is closer to his vision. Yet another reason why the author wants to stay ahead of the series. Read his comment below:
House of the Dragon showrunners actually admitted they were given more creative freedom in the Game of Thrones prequel, where they changed and adjusted a few things to fit not only the show and its characters, but in keeping up with modern times. It is no surprise they were also able to take time in depicting the throne more faithfully to Martin’s vision in the books. In fact, it emphasizes more perfectly on how the Iron Throne fits visually to the theme of the series.
