However, as several new actors have taken over roles previously played by other stars, including David Corenswet replacing Henry Cavill as Superman, will Gadot return as Wonder Woman, or will the DCU recast Diana Prince?
Will Gal Gadot Return as Wonder Woman in DCU?
Gal Gadot debuted as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s 2016 DC Extended Universe film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She then went on to lead two solo movies for the DC hero and appeared in several other franchise films, including Justice League.
But as James Gunn’s DC Universe has yet to introduce its new Princess of Themyscira, will Gadot return to reprise the role?
In an interview with ScreenRant, the 41-year-old star revealed that she hasn’t had “any specific conversations” with Gunn or DC Studios about her potential return as Wonder Woman or playing a new character like Jason Momoa, who appeared as Lobo in Supergirl after previously portraying Aquaman in the DCEU.
However, she admitted they had discussed Wonder Woman 3, but those conversations only happened when “they came to the studio, and they really wanted to develop the third one.”
Since she hasn’t “heard anything” about an offer to return, she instead shared some advice for whoever takes on the role of Wonder Woman in the DCU.
“This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much, so whoever it’s going to be to portray her, I wish for her that she enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character,” she said. “And I’m just grateful that I was granted the opportunity to wear her boots and celebrate this incredible character and everything she stands for.”
Gadot was last seen as the Champion of the Amazons in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash.
As many fans thought she would join the DCU after its post-credits scene featured Peacemaker characters John Economos and Emilia Harcourt, Gunn later said the scene was not canonical, seemingly shutting down the possibility of her return.
Is a DCU Wonder Woman Movie Happening?
The DC Universe has yet to announce its new Wonder Woman, but James Gunn is already working on a new movie. Back in June 2025, Gunn confirmed that a Wonder Woman film was already in the works.
“We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
While details remain under wraps, screenwriter Ana Nogueira revealed that the project is a “priority,” despite there being no updates or casting announcements yet.
According to her, the movie will mark a fresh start for the fan-favorite warrior and will tell a brand-new story unrelated to the previous DC Extended Universe. While she can't give anything away, she still teased what fans can expect.
“There will be a little sniper dot on my head if I say too much. But I will say that, like from all of it, I try to approach every character that I write from a place of what feels is the most true to me about them,” she told Collider. “For Kara [Zor-El], it was this backstory that she had. I always try to come at it that way and put on some blinders, and see what the character means to me before I take them off onto the page.”
So far, there is no word on when the new Wonder Woman movie will be released.
