Madhouse may not be the most talked-about studio among anime fans now, but Frieren proves that Madhouse can still match some of the top studios of today.
This is thanks to the show’s latest episode, which featured jaw-dropping fight scenes that are already one of the highlight scenes of the Fall season.
The best part is, we’re not even halfway through Frieren as this anime will run until March next year. Given this, we can expect even more impeccably animated moments as the story progresses.
Spoiler Warning: There are Frieren Episode 9 spoilers in this article.
Frieren Episode 9 Impresses Fans With Fern and Stark Fights
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End had a lot of hype behind it ahead of its premiere. When it finally aired its first four episodes, the show more than met the lofty expectations thanks to a moving story and beautiful visuals.
Since then, the anime has featured several incredible fight scenes, including Stark against the dragon as well as Fern and Frieren versus Qual.
In Episode 9, the show outdid itself as it featured two eye-popping sequences: Fern versus Lügner and Stark against Linie.
Fern showed off just how powerful she is by soundly defeating Lügner thanks to her lightning-quick spellcasting ability. This was accompanied by impressive visuals and animation of Fern in action.
Not to be outdone, Stark’s fight against Linie was also a highlight of the episode.
It may not have the visual flair of Fern’s magic, but the movements of Stark and Linie are smooth and detailed, making the scene a treat to watch.

Madhouse Shows It Still Matches Today’s Popular Studios
Madhouse is an iconic studio thanks to shows like Trigun, Death Note, and One-Punch Man Season 1.
The studio has continued to be active, but it has arguably been overtaken by the likes of MAPPA and ufotable when it comes to online anime discussions.
With Frieren though, Madhouse proved that it can still go toe-to-toe with the more popular studios of today.
Of course, the show’s staff is also one of the key reasons for the show’s great animation.
An interesting staff member is Keiichiro Saito who serves as the series’ director. Saito is best known for directing Bocchi the Rock!, one of 2022’s biggest anime hits.
With Frieren, Saito proved that his directing skills are not just for comedy as he can also helm a fantasy series with lots of epic action.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will continue with Episode 10 on November 10, 2023.
