We may have lost manga legend Monkey Punch earlier this year, but his most famous work, Lupin III, is getting a movie—and what's more, it's the first Lupin movie to be CG-animated, and it looks fantastic!
I can't really tell what the story is about based on my digging online, but with The First in the title, I think it's going to be an introduction to the character of Lupin which should be fun for both fans and strangers to the series.
Just in case you're not familiar, Lupin III follows Arsene Lupin III, who is the grandson of fictional thief Arsene Lupin. Lupin prides himself to be the greatest thief in the world, and his partner is Daisuke Jigen, an expert marksman. Other characters include master swordsman Goemon Ishikawa XIII and female thief Fujiko Mine who occasionally team-up with Lupin as well. The final main character is Inspector Zenigata, whose main goal in his work is to catch and arrest Lupin.
As I said, the film looks fantastic, and I'm sure creator Monkey Punch would be proud to see it. Though it's CG-animated, it perfectly captures the style of the anime, and the characters all look amazing.
With Cowboy Bebop set to come out next year on Netflix, I'm excited to see this return of Lupin III. I'm sure fans of the classic anime with love this modernized look, and maybe people who would want to get into Lupin III could use this film as their jumping point.
Lupin III: The First comes out in Japan on Dec. 6.
