John Lithgow has responded to the criticisms against his casting as Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter TV series.

It was recently confirmed that the 79-year-old American actor has been cast to play the fan-favorite character in the highly anticipated TV series adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novel series.

However, his casting has received backlash from some fans since he is an American actor, and they questioned whether he is indeed the right choice for the role.

In a recent interview, Lithgow addressed his casting as Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter series. He expressed that he is "very excited" and yet "very intimidated" about the opportunity.

"I will be following the great Michael Gambon. I’m not an Englishman, although I’ve played one on TV. I remind everyone that I did play Winston Churchill on The Crown and did just fine," he said.

The Emmy-winning actor also responded to the criticisms against his casting, and he promised that he would do his best in playing Dumbledore.

"It’s an enormous thrill. But I know there were plenty of people appalled that an American should be hired to play the ultimate English wizard. But, I will do my best," Lithgow said.

It was previously reported that Oscar winner Mark Rylance was originally considered for the role. However, he ultimately passed, and Lithgow was cast to play the Hogwarts Headmaster instead.

What We Know So Far About HBO's Harry Potter Series

HBO's highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series is currently in pre-production as it is set to begin filming later this year.

So far, the main trio has not been cast yet, as we haven't heard a word on who will be the next generation's Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

Last week, HBO officially announced six of the adult cast members who are joining the series.

Aside from Lithgow, the other confirmed castings are Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrel, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
